There’s a Weird Book On The Porch; I Need to Wash My Hands!

Spending time at home with two boys is always a trip. This much time makes it downright laughable sometimes (not always in a good way). Today, my youngest came running into the house yelling. That all by itself is not unexpected. However, the story was. “There’s a weird book on the porch!” He shouts. Hmm, OK. “I need to wash my hands!” he declared. Seems he found the weird book on the porch and then touched it to see what it was before realizing that we have been sanitizing mail and packages. After using my best brain detective skills to get to the root of the mystery, there was laughing, head shaking, and a little exploration. First off, the weird book was the White Pages. Second, my child had never seen one and was perplexed at why someone threw a big, really boring book onto our porch. Then, the exploration. After explaining the purpose of the White Pages, a full hour of investigation began. He grabbed his highlighter and proceeded to find and mark all of the restaurants we have been missing. We have been refraining from take out and we used to eat out A LOT. There were favorite stores, locations of businesses we have used, and the search for my company only to find that the address listed for Kids BRAIN was from 5 years ago. When times are strange, a little fun with a weird book is a good way to kill an hour and to start a conversation about the time when there was no internet, when your phone number was generally available to everyone in your city, and when prehistoric research and alphabetizing skills were needed to find the number for the local pizza place. Things are tense, frustrating, and unpredictable. All of us are adjusting. Take a moment to catch something silly and to share it with someone. A little giggle does a long way.
